來自被列為世界自然遺產的日本屋久島，而島上樹齡超過1000年的杉樹才能被稱為「屋久杉」。


Mokutsuyu木露精油由工匠以獨特的蒸餾方式從屋久杉提煉出來 ，以「新月の屋久杉精油」為例，每100kg原木只能蒸餾出30ml精油，因此帶有濃郁的杉木香氣，而砍伐屋久杉現在是被日本政府所禁止的，因此木露屋久杉精油使用的屋久杉是在400至500年前已被砍伐或自然掉落的木材。


即使它們在森林放置了數百年，仍然沒有腐爛，能夠提煉出高品質的精油。隨著砍伐屋久杉被禁止，能夠提煉精油的屋久杉會愈來愈少屋久杉精油的產量將更為有限。
